Costa Rica Land and Property
Atenas, Costa Rica Real estate

FOWARD: In June, a couple arrived here in Costa Rica as clients we had never met. Now we are glad to call them our friends. This is the (sometimes humorous) account of their adventures. We plan to follow Bob and Margaret through their arrival, renting a house, purchase of property, building a home, and life in general here in Costa Rica. We are proud to have had "a hand" in the events highlited in blue! ...Terry & Rigo
This is their story:
Adventures In Paradise
By Bob (Last name withheld to protect the "innocent")
Chapter One
The Gringos are Coming

nce upon a time, back in the world, two gringos became weary of their life and planned to escape to paradise. They talked to the wise ones and searched the ancient scrolls to learn of the fabled land called "Paradise", and to see if it still existed. They discovered many false claims of "Paradise", but the ancients were right - The True "Paradise" still existed, and could be reached by a two and a half hour flight on American Airlines from Miami to San Jose, Costa Rica.
.....The gringos secretly sold all of their possessions and left in the dark of night so that their families and friends would never find them, and flew to Costa Rica to begin a new life.

30 DAY PROGRESS REPORT:

  1. Have rented a 3 bedroom, 2 bath Tico style house in Atenas, with phone and internet connection.
  2. Have completed immigration filing to achieve Pensionado status
  3. Have established a corporation to own property
  4. Have purchased an SUV (1997 Hyundai galloper diesel 4x4)
  5. Have established a Costa Rican bank account
  6. Have determined the requirements for a property including minimum altitude, temperature, distance from basic services and San Jose.
  7. Have determined that the area matching our requirements is Grecia
  8. Have evaluated 17 properties, made one offer which was thankfully rejected on a 17 acre hillside since we didn’t come down here to become a developer or start farming again.
  9. Are about to make an offer on a 4 acre coffee plantation with a view of the city of Grecia (population 37,000) and the San Jose metro area (population 250,000)
  10. Have made arrangements with neighbor to go to next American legion chapter meeting.
  11. Have had our first house guest (our nephew David) and are expecting our youngest son and his family in august, and our old neighbors from Virginia in October. (the part about covering our tracks so no-one will find us didn’t work! (note: if you move to paradise, everyone WILL find you!!)
  12. During the coming week, we sign up for Spanish lessons at the school in town. The reason we bought a car so soon is that it was easier to buy the car than try to call a taxi in Spanish.

Time to sign off, local time is 5:00am and my schedule calls for my first cup of coffee on the front porch to watch the sunrise and the exotic birds drying off.
